Graduated from the Russian Academy of Theatre Arts (the workshop of the professor G. Ansimov). In 1990 he has founded Moscow Musical theatre Helikon-Opera.
Dmitry Bertman staged about 120 productions in Moscow in "Helikon-Opera", and in other cities of Russia and abroad: in St. Petersburg, Krasnodar, Kaliningrad, Yekaterinburg, Wexford (Ireland), Düsseldorf, Mannheim (Germany), Vienna (Austria), Paris, Montpellier, Strasbourg, Evian, Dijon (France), Toronto (Canada), Rome, Ravenna (Italy), Stockholm, Umeå, Malmö (Sweden), Helsinki (Finland), Santander, Merida, Pere- lada (Spain), Istanbul (Turkey), Tallinn (Estonia), Riga (Latvia) and in many other cities.
Dmitry Bertman was repeatedly awarded with "The Golden Mask" theatre award, "Nail of the season", K.Stanislavsky’s International award, the Moscow Government award. Since 2003 Professor Dmitry Bertman is a head of the Department of Directing and Acting of Musical Theatre at GITIS.
List of productions
Dmitry Bertman was born in Moscow. In 1984 he has entered to the Russian Academy of Theatre Arts (GITIS), the workshop of the People’s artist of the USSR, professor G. Ansimov, where he has gained the speciality of the musical theatre director. While being a student he has staged the series of musical and dramatic performances in the theatres of Russia and Ukraine.
In 1990 he has founded Moscow Musical theatre Helikon-Opera and since then, for over 23 years, has is its Artistic Director. In 1993 the theatre gained the status of a state theatre and soon became one of the most famous Russian opera houses. Having a wide repertoire, including the operas of the XVIII–XXI centuries, from the most popular to the rare ones, also operetta and musical, the theatre actively tours in Russia and abroad. Besides, the theatre realizes co-productions with the major foreign opera houses and festivals.
From 1994 to 2010 Dmitry Bertman has been a teacher of the Bern Opera Studio (Switzerland). He gives master classes in Russia and abroad. In 1996 he became the artistic director of the workshop, and since 2003 - the head of the Department of Directing and Acting of Musical Theatre at GITIS, professor of directing and acting of musical theatre. Dmitry Bertman is the author of many articles and scientific works.
In 1997 Dmitry Bertman was given the title “Merited Worker of the Arts Industry of the Russian Federation”.
In 1997-2001 he became the laureate of the National Theatre Award and Performing Arts Festival “The Golden mask” in the nomination “The best stage-director in the musical theatre” for three times (for the performances: “Carmen”, “Les Contes D'Hoffmann”, “Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk District”). In 2001 Dmitry Bertman was the chairman of the musical jury of the “Golden mask”. In 2005 his production of the “Les Dialogues des Carmelites” was awarded with the prize of the Union of Theatre Workers “Gvozd’ sesona”. In 2006 the performance “Fallen from the Sky” based on the opera “Story of a Real Man” by S. Prokofiev was awarded with the same prize.
In 2003 for the contribution to the world culture Dmitry Bertman was honored with the Maltese cross and the count’s title of the Sovereign Military Hospitaller Order of Saint John of Jerusalem, of Rhodes and of Malta.
In 2003 for the merits in culture and art Dmitry Bertman was awarded by the national French “Order of Academic Palms” (officer degree), and in 2004 with the Maltese cross.
By the president's decree in 2005 Dmitry Bertman was given a rank of the People's Artist of Russia.
In the end of 2005 Dmitry Bertman has become the laureate of K. S. Stanislavsky award in the nomination “Directing Art” for the contribution to the opera directing development.
In 2007 Dmitry Bertman, the artistic director of the Helikon-opera, was awarded with the Moscow City Government Prize for staging performances in 2004-2006 and a significant contribution to the musical culture of Moscow.
In 2008 the President of Republic of Estonia Toomas Hendrik Ilves awarded Dmitri Bertman with Order of Santa Maria Land of the IV degree for his production of the opera "Wallenberg" by Erkki Sven-Tüür in Estonian National Opera.
Dmitry Bertman is also the Laureate of the State Award of Estonia and and the Estonian Theater Union Prize.
By the president's decree Dmitry Bertman, the artistic director of the Helikon-opera theatre, was awarded with the Order of Friendship for the merits in development of the national culture and art, longstanding fruitful activity.
For many years Bertman has been closely cooperating with Kultura TV-channel, being the director and participant of many TV-programs.
On October 23, 2011 by resolution of the 6th (20th) Congress of the Theatre Union of the Russian Federation, Dmitry Bertman was unanimously elected the Secretary of the Union of Theatre Workers of the Russian Federation.
In 2012 Dmitry Bertman joined the Council of Culture at the Chairman of the State Duma of the Federal Assembly of the Russian Federation.
Besides the work in the Helikon-opera, Dmitry Bertman is in demand as the opera director all over the world. Repeatedly has staged the productions of the operas in the Canadian Opera (Toronto), in the Royal Swedish Opera (Stockholm). Among his productions there are “Il re nudo” by Lombardi in the Rome Opera, (2009), “Rusalka” by Dvořák in Canadian Opera (Toronto 2009 an Frankfurt), “The Love for Three Oranges” by S. Prokofiev and “Faust” by Ch. Gounod in the "Estonia" Theatre (Tallinn, Estonia). In 2010 the premiere of the opera “Intizar” by Ali-zade took place in the Geidar Aliev Palace (Baku, Azerbaidjan); In the end of 2010 in the Swedish Royal Opera took place the premiere of the opera «Andrea Chenier» by U. Giordano. In February 2011 he has staged the opera “Otello” by G. Verdi in the Norrlands Opera (Sweden); In September 2012 – the premiere of the opera “Iolanta” by P. I. Tchaikovsky in the “Children’s musical theatre named after Natalia Sats” (Moscow, Russia) and “Faust” by Ch. Gounod in the "Estonia" Theatre (Tallinn, Estonia); In December 2012 in the Latvian National Opera (Riga) – “Tosca” by G. Puccini. The opera “Nabucco” by G. Verdi, staged by Dmitry Bertman in France for the Duo Dijon, was gotten by the Mariinsky Theatre. By this production its new stage was opened on May 4 (2013), in the main roles Placido Domingo and Maria Guleghina have performed. In February 2014 Dmitry Bertman has staged “Eugene Onegin” by P. I. Tchaikovsky on the stage of the Norrlandopera (Umea, Sweden), which was named the cultural capital of Europe in 2014. And in April 2014 in the Malmö Stadsteater took place the premiere of the “Der Rosenkavalier” by J. Strauss, staged by Dmitry Bertman. On the Helikon-opera theatre’s stage Dmitry Bertman has presented the opera “Le Rossignol” by I. Stravinsky. Dmitry Bertman was collaborating with outstanding conductors: R. Muti, A. Alemandi, R. Bradshaw, D. Callegari, J. Morandi, K. Badea, T. Severini, M. Rostropovich, V. Gergiev, G. Rozhdestvensky, A. Lazarev, V. Ponkin and world opera stars: Placido Domingo, Jose Cura, Montserrat Caballe, Norma Fantini, Roberto Alanya, Angela Georgiu, Maria Guleghina, Katarina Dalaiman, Inva Mula. He often is invited as a jury member in various international opera contests, is a regular jury member of the Belvedere Singing Competition.
On May 3(2014) on the Helikon-opera theatre stage took place the premiere of the operetta “La belle Hélène” by J. Offenbach, staged by Dmitry Bertman.
In October 2014, Dmitry Bertman staged a historic concert at the State Academic Bolshoi Theatre of Russia - Elena Obraztsova Opera Ball, dedicated to the 75th anniversary of the great singer. The concert featured the world opera stars Anna Netrebko, Maria Guleghina, Jose Cura, Dmitri Hvorostovsky, Yuzif Eivazov, Olga Peretyat'ko and others. Together with the outstanding artists the choir of "Helikon-Opera" took part in the show at the Bolshoi Theatre.
In January 2015 artists of "Helikon-Opera" took part in a joint project of "Helikon-Opera" and Moscow State Philharmonic, "Demon" by A. Rubinstein with participation of Dmitry Khvorostovsky, Asmik Grigoryan and Alexander Tsymbaluk, as well as the State Orchestra of Russia named after Eugene Svetlanov under Mikhail Tatarnikov. The stage director of the performance was Dmitry Bertman.
The first performances staged by Dmitry Bertman after the return of his Helikon-Opera theatre to Bolshaya Nikitskaya were "Sadko" by N. A. Rimsky-Korsakov's, "Eugene Onegin" by P. I Tchaikovsky (re-creation of the legendary Stanislavsky performance of 1922).
In March of 2016 the long-awaited premiere of "The Rake's Progress" by Igor Stravinsky in Dmitry Bertman's production was performed on stage of the Finnish National Opera in Helsinki.
In April 2016 the premiere of "The Golden Cockerel" opera by Rimsky-Korsakov took place in the Deutsche Oper am Rhein (Germany). The production – is the coproduction with the Deutsche Oper am Rhein, the Moscow premiere took place on July 1, 2018.
In June 2016 Dmitry Bertman staged "Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk" by D. Shostakovich on stage of the Municipal Theatre of São Paulo in Brazil (coproduction of São Paulo and Helikon-Opera theatre).
On January 28 (2017) on the Helikon-opera stage took place the premiere of the opera “Turandot” by G. Puccini, staged by Dmitry Bertman. The outstanding conductor of nowadays, the People's artist of the USSR Vladimir Fedoseyev, set designer from Canada Camellia Koo and lighting designer from USA Thomas Hase were working together with the artistic director of the theatre.
On June 27 (2017) Dmitry Bertman has presented “Il Trovatore” by G. Verdi to the Moscow audience. Musical Director and Conductor – Oliver Diaz (Spain).
On September 21 (2017) the Mayor of the City of Moscow has signed a decree about the awarding Dmitry Bertman with Decoration “For Impeccable Service to the Moscow city”.
On November 11(2017) in honor of the anniversary Dmitry Bertman was given the Order “For Merits to the Kaliningrad Oblast”.
On December 9 (2017) on the stage of the Stravinsky Hall took place the premiere of the opera “The Queen of Spades” by P. I. Tchaikovsky. Dmitry Bertman was staing it together with the People’s artist of the USSR Vladimir Fedoseyev.
On December 13 (2017) Dmitry Bertman was awarded with the Certificate of Honour of the Moscow state Duma “For Merits to the urban community”.
On December 20, 2017, to Dmitry Bertman and the theatre staff the Gratitude of the Academy of Management of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Russia was announced.
In 2017 Dmitry Bertman was given a honorary title “Academician, real member of the Russian Academy of Arts” for the outstanding contribution of the development of the national culture and art.

On April 2018 the audience of Barcelona was applauding the premiere of the opera "Demon" by A. Rubinstein at the «Grand Theatre del Liceo». International crew was working on staging the show: director Dmitry Bertman (art director of the «Helikon-opera», musical director and conductor - Mikhail Tatarnikov (the Principal conductor of the Mikhailovsky Theatre), the scenery and costumes were created by well-known Austrian artist Hartmut Schoghofer, lighting plot of the «Demon» was provided by Thomas Hase – famous master of the light and over the stage movement of the actors works Edvald Smirnov, the chief choreographer of «Helikon-opera». The production on the Liceo’s stage – is a start of the grandiose coproduction: «Grand Theatre del Liceo» (Barcelona), «Staatstheater Nürnberg» (Nürnberg), «Opéra National de Bordeaux» (Bordo) and «Helikon-opera» (Moscow). On the Stravinsky hall stage the «Demon» by Anton Rubinstein will appear in the 2020.
On May 28 (2018) in the framework of the annual general meeting of the International academy of television and radio took place the international conference “Eurasian Information Partnership” and a solemn presentation of awards for academic recognition to the laureates in media, science and culture. Dmitry Bertman was awarded with the “Academic Recognition-2018” prize.
In September 2018 has been known, that from 2020 Dmitry Bertman will become the artistic director of the Birgitta Festival.
On November 20 (2018) Vladimir Putin has signed a decree about the approval the new composition of the Presidential Council for Culture and Art. Dmitry Bertman has joined the new composition.
On May 5 on the “Radio Russia” Dmitry Bertman has presented the cycle of the authorial program “Tchaikovsky”, dedicated to the 180th birthday anniversary of the great Russian composer Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky.
On July 24 (2019) on the “Saaremaa opera days” festival took place the world premiere of the “Mr. Georg Ots”, staged by Dmitry Bertman. The performance was presented to the moscow audience on September 25.
“Mr. Georg Ots” - is the coproduction with the largest concert organization Eesti Kontsert, in which both Russian and Estonian actors participate.
On October 1 (2019), on the International music day in the New National Theatre Tokyo with the phenomenal success took place the premiere of the opera “Eugene Onegin” staged by Dmitry Bertman. Together with him the friendly team of helikonians was working on the performance: set and costume designers Igor Nezhny and Tatiana Tulubieva, assistant director Galina Timakova, lighting designer Denis Enyukov, choreographer Edvald Smirnov. The musical direction of the production was assumed by maestro Andriy Yurkevich, in the main parts have performed by Evgenia Muraveva (Tatyana) Vasily Ladyuk (Onegin), Pavel Kolgatin (Lensky), Toriki Yayoi (Olga), Alexey Tikhomirov (Gremin).
On October, 22 (2019) G. Verdi’s “La Traviata” came back to Helikon-opera! Breathtaking production of Dmitry Bertman, Alexander Sladkovsky, Igor Nezhny, Tatiana Tulubieva, Damir Ismagilov, Edwald Smirnov has aroused audience’s admiration and confidently and triumphantly «rushed into» the operatic life of Moscow.
On December 3, 2019 The State Music and Pedagogical Institute named after M. M. Ippolitov-Ivanov has celebrated the 100th anniversary. In honor of this event in the Big Hall of Moscow State Conservatory took place the charity gala-concert. By the “Russian performing arts foundation” general and artistic director of the Helikon-opera Dmitry Bertman was awarded by the medal “For contribution to the development of musical culture”.
On January 26 (2020) in the Helikon-opera took place the memorial charity evening and “Remembrance keeper” awarding ceremony. It was the central event of the “Holocaust Remembrance week”, dedicated to the anniversary of the liberation the death-camp Auschwitz-Birkenau by the Red Army. The “Remembrance keeper” award is allotted to those, who has made a special contribution to keeping memory of the Holocaust. General and artistic director of the Helikon-opera Dmitry Bertman has become one of the award owner.
On January 29 (2020) in the Opéra National de Bordeaux with the great success took place the firstnight of the “Demon” by A. Rubinstein, staged by Dmitry Bertman. Conductor Paul Daniel, set and costume designer Hartmut Schoghofer (Austria), lighting designer Thomas Hase (USA), choreographer Edvald Smirnov also were working on the performance.
The production on the oldest European stage – is the second step of the international coproduction of 4 opera houses: Grand Theatre del Liceo (Barcelona), Opéra National de Bordeaux, Staatstheater Nürnberg and Helikon-opera (Moscow). It is amazing how each time the birth of the performance happens all over again, but the opera finds the new breath. Opéra National de Bordeaux and its art-director Marc Minkowski have dedicated the premiere of the “Demon” to the outstanding actor Dmitry Hvorostovsky.
On August 17 (2020) Dmitry Bertman was awarded with "The gratitude of the Minister of Culture of the Russian Federation" for the significant contribution to the proceeding the Year of the Theatre in the Russian Federation.
On September, 8 (2020) the two significant events took place in the Helikon’s walls: for the first time after the coronavirus pandemic the audience has come to the theatre and for first time the opera of A. Dargomyzhsky “The Stone Guest” staged by Dmitry Bertman has been presented of the stage of the Stravinsky Hall. Together with him, over the staging of the performance have been working director Galina Timakova, musical director Mikhail Egiazaryan, production and costume designer Alla Shumeiko, lighting designer Denis Enyukov, video designer Alexander Andronov, makeup artist Elena Nalichaeva.
On February, 10 (2021) the premiere of “Tosca” by G. Puccini took place in Helikon-opera. This opera is a real challenge to a director due to the hundred versions of this genious of this piece. His first “Tosca” Dmitry Bertman has staged in Riga (Latvia National Opera) in 2004 at his friend’s invitation – stage director Andrejs Žagars. The premiere in Helikon is dedicated to his memory. Authors of the production: director Dmitry Bertman, conductor Valery Kiryanov, set designer - Igor Nezhny, costume designer - Tatiana Tulubieva, light Designer — Damir Ismagilov and Denis Enyukov, choreographer Edvald Smirnov, assistants Ilya Ilyin and Mikhail Sabelev. The premiere was supported by our partner “Baskin-Robbins”, which has presented the new kind of ice cream – “Vitamin Ice Cream”.
On October, 21 (2021) a historical event took place at Helikon-opera - the premiere of the opera “Alfa & Omega” by G. Shohat (libretto by Dori Manor and Anna Hermann). And for the first time in Moscow opera is performed in Hebrew. The premiere took place with the support of the Ministry of Culture of the Russian Federation and the Department of Culture of the city of Moscow.International team was working on the production: head of the production Dmitry Bertman, conductor – Valery Kiryanov, set Designer – Pavel Dragunov (Kazakhstan), costume designer – Sofia Tasmagambetova (Kazakhstan), lighting Designer – Denis Enyukov, choreographer – Edvald Smirnov, video Designer – Alexander Andronov, choirmaster – Evgeny Ilyin.
The opening of the exclusive exhibition “Marc Chagall. Projection through the time” is confined to the premiere. This was made possible due to the Leonid Shaiman, Embassy of Israel, Vadim Kossinsky, Sergey Ustinov and the Israeli cultural center "Nativ". This is really priceless exposition, which presents previously not set to show exhibits from the private collections - Marc Chagall’s letters and two pieces of art “Lamb” by M.Chagall and the “Portrait of an old Jew” by Yehuda Pen (Chagall’s teacher).
